Bednest Bassinet review
Standalone & bedside sleeper bassinet. Priced at $570.
Good points
Foldable and has a carry bag.
Ability to set the head end higher than the foot end, to help with reflux.
Bad points
Serious safety failure: Inadequate breathable zones due to the supplied mattress being too shallow, creating a suffocation risk if a baby rolls face first into the sides. There is also no breathable zone at either end due to wooden panels.
Serious safety failure: Bassinet has insufficient depth, which poses a fall risk.
Serious safety failure: Limb entrapment hazards at the gaps between the edges of the side panels that can be opened; and at the carrying handle holes on both end panels.
Serious safety failure: Failed our stability test. It tipped over when tested at its maximum height, and showed signs of becoming unstable when tested at mid-height.
Serious safety failure: Not adequately secured to the bedside and became dislodged during our force tests.
Minor safety failure: Finger entrapment hazard in gap between the outer edge of the mattress base and lower edge of the side panels.
Minor safety failure: Half-open side panel is not sturdy enough and collapsed when the test force was applied to it.
Minor safety failure: Very fiddly to adjust the straps and buckles when securing to the bedside.
Recall update: In late 2014, the manufacturer told us the 2015 version of the Bednest met the US bedside sleeper and bassinet safety standards and has withstood sufficient vertical and horizontal forces (this standard does not reference breathable zones). In April 2015, a baby suffocated in the UK after being left in a Bednest operating in a half-open position. Following the fatality, a voluntary recall was issued which requires a modification kit to be installed to existing models, which prevents the bedside sleeper from operating in a half-open position. Current models being sold do not allow the Bednest to operate in a half-open position. Despite this modification, CHOICE will not retest the Bednest as there are still too many failures.

Based on our safety performance test. Recommended models meet all key safety requirements and score at least 80% for performance. Some lower-scoring models (60-65%) may still be worth considering if they meet all key safety requirements, but fail on minor points such as finger entrapment.
