Need to know
- The 2025 EOFY sales are well underway and major retailers are cutting prices on a broad range of products
- Brands are heavily promoting their discounts, but some of the items on offer performed poorly in CHOICE tests
- But we've also seen decent savings on items we recommend, so it's important to check CHOICE reviews before you buy
The 2025 end of the financial year (EOFY) sales are here and retailers and manufacturers are dropping prices on lots of products in the final days before June 30.
In the last month, we've seen major retailers such as Harvey Norman and Amazon, and manufacturers like Samsung and Dyson, cut prices on their stock by as much as 70%.
Every day brings more deals, and while we have seen quality products going for cheaper than normal, EOFY can also be a time when retailers try to offload unpopular products, leading to dud items getting mixed in among bargain stock.
In fact, some of the most attention-grabbing markdowns we've seen so far this year are on products that have performed poorly in our reviews.
So how can you avoid ending up with one of these poor performers?
As an independent expert tester of many of the products being slapped with EOFY markdowns, CHOICE is uniquely able to shine a light on the actual quality of what's being sold.
Read on to find some of the best deals we've spotted so far on products our experts have tested and recommend (available exclusively to CHOICE members). But first, we'll reveal the deals we've seen that look like attempts by retailers to clear out dud stock.
On this page:
Poor-performing products in the EOFY sales
Even at their lower EOFY prices, many of these products are outperformed by cheaper alternatives in our tests.
However, some of these items could have unique strengths that suit your circumstances, so check our reviews for the breakdown of the pros and cons we found for each.
Shonky smartphones
This EOFY, Harvey Norman has been cutting prices on the Motorola G04 smartphone, but its latest rock-bottom rate of $179 only serves to better match the phone's rock-bottom performance.
With its poor camera, sound quality and screen display, as well as an all-round subpar performance, the G04 came last in our latest smartphone test.
A stick vacuum that sucks in a bad way
Dyson makes some good stick vacuum cleaners, but the Omni-Glide isn't one of them.
This Dyson stick vac features in the sales, but we don't recommend buying it.
It's designed to be used on hard floors, but it was outclassed even in this category in our latest stick vac review.
Poor cleaning performance, combined with lacklustre battery life and a small collection bin, landed it second-last place in our latest test.
We've recently seen it discounted on Dyson's website, but at EOFY you'll likely be able to find a good deal on something better.
A terrible TV
Harvey Norman is currently trying to shift the Toshiba 43C350NP TV out of its stores, but shoppers are the ones who should be moving on.
A lesson in how "clearance" tags should sometimes be treated with suspicion, this 43-inch LCD model disappointed when we put it through its paces.
An over-saturated 4K image, occasional sound distortion and an incredibly slow start-up time of 20 seconds gave our testers no choice but to give it a CHOICE Expert Rating of only 69%, equal third-worst out of 43 models.
Draining dryers
Fisher & Paykel's Series 5, 7kg clothes dryer has appeared front and centre in some of the latest EOFY deals from major appliance retailers.
It's front and centre in this year's sales, but this Bosch dryer came last in our latest review.
You'd therefore be forgiven for succumbing to temptation, but beware before you buy: this model was rated the fourth-worst by our expert testers in our latest dryer review.
Namely because, even among a class of dryers infamous for putting a strain on your power bill, this vented number was found to cost much more to run than other models.
Another EOFY dryer deal grabbing our attention for the wrong reasons is Appliances Online's 36% discount on the Bosch 9kg heat pump dryer.
While this model has a decent energy economy, the fact that it took almost four hours to dry a load of clothes means it would cost twice as much to run as other heat pump models.
In the end, none of its good points could save it from coming dead last in our latest dryer review.
A marginal mattress
Big discounts don't always mean big value – that's the lesson from Mattress retailer Snooze's almost 50% markdown on Sealy's Back Support Harmony.
Getting a mattress for half the price you would normally pay might sound attractive, but it's less tempting when you know that this Sealy was named equal second-worst in our latest mattress test.
Most notably, our experts found it to have a stabilisation score of only 12%, meaning you could be in for a rough night if you or anyone you're sharing a bed with is a restless sleeper.
A shonky smart doorbell
In another example of how it can pay to be sceptical of eye-grabbing price reductions, Harvey Norman has slashed the price of one model of Connect Smart video doorbell by almost 70% in recent weeks.
But this Full HD Video Doorbell came second-last in our most recent smart doorbell test, with poor sound quality and a lack of internal storage leading our experts to give it a CHOICE Expert Rating of only 58%.
