We recommend drills that score 70% or more overall and at least 80% for performance, and exclude any models that score poorly for ease of use (45% or less).

The torque test score is based on screwing TEK screws of two different sizes (14G 50mm and 14G 75mm, 25 of each) into treated pine. The more screws screwed in (fully flush with the wood), the higher the score.

Drilling score is based on the time taken to drill 10 holes with a 13mm spade bit through 45mm hardwood (spotted gum). The faster the time, the better the score.

The drills are assessed for weight/balance and grip comfort by a panel made up of a right-handed man, a left-handed man and a right-handed woman.

Generally, higher voltage batteries tend to deliver more drilling power and torque.

Drills with two gears can usually better handle a range of drilling tasks. Low gear is for slow, powerful drilling such as a wide diameter bit through steel, or driving screws. High gear is for fast drilling, such as small diameter bits through timber.

Brushless motors are frictionless which makes them more energy-efficient and quieter. They're also compact, provide higher torque, have better speed control and performance efficiency.

The maximum diameter drill bit the chuck can take. 10mm is enough for most basic drilling jobs but 13mm naturally allows for larger bits. All tested models have keyless chucks (the chuck can be loosened and tightened by hand).

A slot on the drill body to keep the screwdriver bit(s).
