Type View more details.

Barrel vacs (aka cylinder vacs) are the type you pull along behind you – their long hoses and wands make them well-suited to cleaning a variety of spaces, including stairs and car interiors. Upright models are good for cleaning large areas of carpet as they have built-in power heads. Stick models are included in this review if they are plugged in rather than cordless.

Bagless vacs have on-board bins which can be messy to empty, but at least you don't need to worry about buying bags. Bags can be less messy to remove and replace, but are an ongoing cost. See our buying guide for more info.

Recommended View more details.

We recommend barrel and upright vacuum cleaners with a CHOICE Expert Rating of at least 75%, and at least 70% for both quick carpet cleaning and complete carpet cleaning.

CHOICE Expert Rating View more details.

The CHOICE Expert Rating is made up of cleaning performance score (55%), ease of use (30%) and pet hair removal (15%).

Cleaning performance score View more details.

This score is a composite of the quick carpet clean score (67%) and the complete carpet clean score (33%).

Quick carpet clean score View more details.

The quick carpet clean score is based on just four passes over the carpet rather than the eight performed in the deep clean test. This test simulates typical everyday cleaning. We pre-load the vacuum cleaners with artificial household dust, and embed sand evenly into a section of carpet before vacuuming it to a set pattern and speed. The sand collected is then weighed and recorded as a percentage of the sand applied; this is repeated twice for each vacuum cleaner and results averaged. We rate all models based on the dirt pick-up performance from carpet using the standard cleaning head.

Complete carpet clean score View more details.

The complete carpet clean score is based on eight passes over the carpet.

Ease of use score View more details.

Ease of use is based on how easy it is to manoeuvre the cleaner, and move the cleaning head on the carpet and under low furniture. We assess how difficult it is to empty and change the dirt receptacle; operation of the controls; and how easy the supplied accessories are to use and store.

Pet hair removal score View more details.

To test pet hair removal, we embed cat hair in the carpet and, as with the dirt pick-up test, vacuum it to a set pattern and speed. We rate the results based on how much cat hair is left behind after the test. Where supplied, the turbo brush or power head is used for this test; otherwise, we use the standard cleaning head. Pet hair for testing supplied by Woof Cat & Dog Grooming, Bondi, NSW.

Cleaning corners and edges score View more details.

To test this, sand is spread into a right-angled corner. Using the standard cleaning head, it's vacuumed to see how close to the corner each cleaner is able to pick up dirt. You may get better results with the specialist attachments.

Noise (dB) View more details.

Noise is measured at the user's position at maximum power setting. For comparison, a typical conversation is carried out at about 60dB, while city traffic is measured at around 80dB.

Warranty (years) View more details.

This is the manufacturers stated warranty.

Shop Ethical rating View more details.

Shop Ethical rates the environmental and social impact of the company (not the product) using independent sources. This rating is not included in our total score. The rating ranks from A (highest) to F (lowest); N/A means there is no rating for that company.

Reliability score View more details.

These scores are taken from our latest brand reliability survey and do not contribute to the CHOICE Expert Rating. The score refers to the brand, not a particular model. N/A or Not available means there weren't enough responses for that brand to get a score.

Satisfaction score View more details.

These scores are taken from our latest brand reliability survey. When rating satisfaction we ask owners to tell us what they think of the products they own. We use this information to give each brand an owner satisfaction rating so you can see what people who use the brand each day think of them. N/A or Not available means there weren't enough responses for that brand to get a score.

Country of origin View more details.

The model has a claimed origin. This ought to be taken with a grain of salt, given it's rare that all the materials for a product came from the one country.
