This overall score is made up of the DSL (modem) score (50%) and the Wi-Fi score (50%).

DSL = internet connectivity. We created a weighting system for DSL performance, based on a download score (60%) and an upload score (40%).

Download score found by taking the average speeds over lines of certain distances:

• 50m - 10%.
• 150m - 20%.
• 450m - 40%.
• 1050m - 20%.
• 1500m - 5%.
• 1050m with noise/interference on the line - 5%.

A combination of router performance on the 5GHz band (60%) and the 2.4GHz band (40%).

Where the price is displayed as $0 the modem-router is supplied by an internet service provider (ISP). However, there can be extra costs associated with getting a modem-router from an ISP when signing up to a broadband plan.

Modem-routers without Wi-Fi connectivity scored worse. These were the Billion BiPAC 8900X, DrayTek Vigor DV130, and Netgear DM200.

Dual-band routers support both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz spectrums.

802.11ac is superior to 802.11n. The latest standard, 802.11ax (AKA Wi-Fi 6), is very new and was not supported by any modem-routers tested.
