What is the CHOICE Expert Rating?

CHOICE Expert Rating

This is the product's overall performance score, based on key tests conducted by our industry experts in the CHOICE labs.

Good points

β€’ 2 wheels with brakes.
β€’ Pocket on one cot end.
β€’ Canopy with insect net and 3 stuffed toys.

Bad points

β€’ Serious safety failure: Portable cot is not deep enough, posing a fall risk.
β€’ Serious safety failure: Inadequate mesh breathable zones in both upper and lower positions, creating a suffocation risk if a child rolls face first against the material.
β€’ Serious safety failure: Neck entrapment hazard at sides and ends of cot.
β€’ Serious safety failure: Clothing can snag at the protruding upper part of the cot corners on the side that can be opened, when it is open; a strangulation risk.
β€’ Serious safety failure: The mattress is not firm enough in bassinet mode, creating a possible suffocation risk if a child rolls onto their side or front.
β€’ Serious safety failure: Fall risk when using the change table.
β€’ Serious safety failure: Head and limb entrapment hazard between the change table sides and top rail of the cot (as well as a minor finger entrapment hazard at the corner openings).
β€’ Minor safety failure: 1. Mattress may separate from its position in bassinet mode.
β€’ Minor safety failure: One cot end can be partially disassembled by unzipping; there is concern a child could get out of the cot and that resulting openings could case a head/neck entrapment hazard.
β€’ Very minor failure: There are pinching points that pose an injury to the person folding and unfolding the cot, at the corners where the top rails are joined.
β€’ Unpleasant smell which lasted for some time during and after unpacking.
β€’ Very hard to put together the change table tubular frame; and even much harder to pull apart.
β€’ Hard to pack the many pieces and bundling the mattress is tight.
Poor set of instructions.
β€’ Note: Due to its many failings, this portable cot has a performance score of zero and was recalled by the ACCC.

CHOICE Expert Rating View more details.

The CHOICE Expert Rating is made up of a combination of performance (70%) and ease of use (30%). Our observations are based on the latest voluntary Australian standard AS/NZS 2195:2010. Recommended portacots pass all safety requirements such as suffocation risks. Lower-scoring models (in the 60–69% range) are worth considering if they meet all key safety requirements. They may fail some minor points such as finger entrapment hazards.

Based on tests to the latest Australian standard for portable cots, AS/NZS 2195:2010, which goes above mandatory requirements. Supplied accessories such as bassinets and change tables are also assessed and factored into the score. The lower the score, the more significant the safety failures we found. Check the 'Bad points' for each portacot in our comparison table for details of any failures and manufacturer responses.

Whether the portacot passed the most important safety tests of the voluntary Australian Standard, AS/NZS 2195:2010, which goes above mandatory requirements. Tests include having breathable mesh on all sides, and no suffocation or strangulation hazards. Some models that pass key tests still have some minor failures and therefore aren't fully recommended, but are still worth considering.
