Our recommended models all pass the standard test for sleep surface firmness, AS/NZS 8811.1:2013 which involves placing a test apparatus and assessing softness at various points. In addition, CHOICE also checks to see if mattress dimensions are as accurate as claimed/advertised measurements.

Our CHOICE Expert Rating is based on our safety tests. We test mattresses against the Australian/NZ standard for mattress firmness. We also check the measurements of the mattress, as certain discrepancies between stated and actual dimensions can cause a safety hazard. These are also recorded and scored.

Whether the cot mattresses pass the sleep surface test method for firmness, AS/NZS 9911.1:2013. Parents are advised by safety experts to always choose a 'firm' mattress to minimise the risk of sudden unexpected death in infancy (SUDI).

We may retest models over time, to see if manufacturers make changes.

Discontinued models can't be found in retailers or online or are no longer manufactured. If you're considering a second-hand mattress, it's best to use one in clean, good condition, that's been stored well.
