In 1925 the National Roads and Motorists' Association (NRMA) started providing insurance to its members in New South Wales and the ACT. It later acquired SGIO (Western Australia) and SGIC (South Australia – new policies no longer available) and formed a joint venture with RACV (Victoria).
NRMA demutualised in 2000, separating its road services and insurance operations. While the road service is still a member-owned organisation, NRMA Insurance is a public company.
