Need to know

  • More air fryers are becoming available with baskets made from alternative non-stick materials such as glass and ceramic coatings
  • CHOICE experts recently put a range of air fryers through a tests and assessment in our kitchen labs to help you find the product that best suits your needs.
  • Our latest CHOICE review includes over 40 models from leading brands such as Philips, Ninja, Kmart, Healthy Choice, Aldi, Sunbeam and more

Air fryers are one of the latest kitchen must-haves for home cooks who value speed and convenience. Offering a healthier alternative to traditional deep-frying, air fryers are essentially mini ovens, circulating hot air within an enclosed space to deliver crisp, golden results on a variety of foods, using little to no oil.

From single-drawer and twin models to multi-functional ovens, the variety of air fryers on the market today is continually expanding. New models spruik an array of different features and cooking modes, and come in a range of sizes and configurations to suit different cooking styles and households.

Most air fryers have baskets which use non-stick coatings made with PFAS – a group of widely used chemicals that are exceptionally resistant to oil, water, heat and stains, and give many forms of cookware their non-stick properties. You may recognise the name of the specific PFAS used in cookware: PTFE (also known as Teflon).

There have been concerns raised over the years about the potential health risk associated with exposure to these types of chemical coatings

While convenient and easy to clean, there have been concerns raised over the years about the potential health risk associated with exposure to these types of chemical coatings. Many scientific studies have investigated potential health effects resulting from PFAS exposure, but the results have been mixed, and scientific understanding is still developing as more research is undertaken. At the current time it is unclear if migration of PFAS chemicals in non-stick cookware into food causes harm to human health.

Alternatives to air fryers with Teflon coating

Targeted at consumers who may want to avoid using cookware with these types of chemical coatings, more air fryers are becoming available with baskets made  from alternative materials such as glass and steel, or with parts and accessories coated with alternative non-stick materials such as ceramic or food-grade silicone.

As well as being free of chemical coatings, glass basket air fryers offer the added advantage of providing increased visibility during cooking, so it's easy to see how well your nuggets are crisping up. Ceramic-coated or food-grade silicone-coated baskets also offer Teflon-free non-stick capabilities.

If you're looking to avoid buying an air fryer with a Teflon coating, we have tested several options in our latest air fryer review. When testing air fryers, CHOICE experts rate each model on its cooking performance (including how well it cooks popular items such as nuggets, frozen chips, roast pork and marinated chicken wings) and how easy each model is to use and clean. You can also choose to sort out reviews on your preferred type, size and basket material.

Ninja Foodi SmartLid Multi Cooker OL650

  • CHOICE Expert Rating: 88%
  • Cooking Performance Score: 98%
  • Basket material: Ceramic-coated
  • Price: $350

The top-scoring air fryer in our review is actually so much more than just an air fryer. Although you're paying a much heftier price than you would for a standard air fryer, the Ninja Foodi is a versatile multi-functional cooker with three modes (pressure cooking, steam combination and air fryer mode) as well as 14 functions including slow cooking, baking/roasting, proving and dehydrating.

The multi-cooker has a lid that opens from the top and a cooking pot and basket with a non-stick ceramic coating. It performed particularly well in our testing, achieving a perfect 100% score for cooking crumbed chicken and marinated chicken wings and a score of 95% for frozen chips.

Our experts also rated its ease of use, noting the comprehensive instruction manual, easy clean bowl and steam clean function. It is however a very bulky and heavy appliance - it weighs over 11kg - so you would probably want to keep it on your bench to get the most out of it.

Instant Pot Duo Crisp AF8 Multi-Use Pressure Cooker and Air Fryer

  • CHOICE Expert Rating: 81%
  • Cooking Performance Score: 89%
  • Basket material: Stainless steel and ceramic-coating
  • Price: $389

Another multi-cooker and air fryer that received an impressive CHOICE Expert Rating of 81% in our air fryer testing is this Instant Pot model, which combines air fryer functions with other cooking modes such as pressure cook, sauté, steam, slow cook and sous vide. The inner pot is stainless steel and the air fryer basket is made from aluminium and stainless steel with a ceramic coating.

This Instant Pot comes with a comprehensive manual and there are lots of online instruction videos and recipes available, making it user-friendly for beginners and experienced cooks alike. The fingerprint-resistant stainless steel exterior is also beneficial for cleaning.

CHOICE testers did note some downsides - the bulky design and some parts that can be fiddly to clean, especially around the lid and bowl, may be inconvenient. The lack of a handle on the cooking bowl and potentially hot exterior surfaces are also concerns, but for performance and functionality, it's a strong contender.

Crumble air fryer CCAF6LAU1

  • CHOICE Expert Rating: 77%
  • Cooking Performance Score: 83%
  • Basket material: Food-grade silicone coated
  • Price: $429

Crumble, the Australian brand founded in 2020 and known for its cookware, launched its first air fryer in February 2025. Giving it a CHOICE Expert Rating of 77% after testing it in our kitchen labs (with a perfect 100% score on cooking roast pork), our testers noted the air fryer is easy to use and relatively easy to clean with basic controls.

Although this also has downsides as it also comes with quite basic instructions and there are no pre-programmed settings - surprising given its relatively hefty price tag. It also performed less impressively in some cooking tests, such as in our frozen chips test where it rated 65%.

It has a stainless steel exterior and the air basket has a non-stick coating made from 100% food-grade silicone that claims to be free from harmful chemicals like PTFE, PFOA, and PFAS.

It is a relatively large unit, with CHOICE experts noting that it may not easily store away in a cupboard so is probably best left out on the kitchen counter to maximise use. If you're all about kitchen co-ordination, it's also the first air fryer we've seen available in a range of colours, including pink, grey and lavender, and in a gloss or matte finish.

GreenPan Bistro XL Air fryer

  • CHOICE Expert Rating: 77%
  • Cooking Performance Score: 80%
  • Basket material: Ceramic-coated
  • Price: $199

CHOICE experts were pleased with the cooking performance of this GreenPan air fryer, scoring it at 90% on cooking marinated chicken wings and 85% on roast pork, and noting a few features that can make everyday cooking simpler and more convenient.

The manufacturer states it comes with a PFAS-free ceramic non-stick coated bowl and CHOICE experts say that its compact, lightweight design can mean it is easy to store and handle. Users can choose from pre-programmed settings or adjust the time and temperature mid-cook for flexibility, while the shake prompt is also handy to give you best results.

However, there are a few drawbacks. CHOICE experts note that the preset icons can be confusing at first, requiring a glance at the manual, and the lack of a viewing window may frustrate those who like to monitor their food while cooking. The touch panel can be unresponsive if greasy, and cleaning around the exposed element can be tricky, potentially causing built-up residue over time.

Healthy Choice 6.5L Digital Air Fryer AFG605

  • CHOICE Expert Rating: 74%
  • Cooking Performance Score: 80%
  • Basket material: Glass
  • Price: $180

There are currently few air fryers with glass baskets available in Australia, although CHOICE experts anticipate we will be seeing more released soon. We have tested this Healthy Choice air fryer which comes with an advertised 6.5 litre glass bowl (although when we measured the actual capacity of the bowl, we found it to be 6 litres).

Performing particularly well in our crumbed chicken and frozen chips cooking tests, CHOICE experts also note positives such as the digital display with touch controls and pre-programmed settings with adjustable temperature. It is compact and may fit more comfortably in a cupboard than other units we've seen.

While the glass bowl has advantages in that you can view some of the food during cooking, experts note that it is also heavy and although it has handles, these can get dangerously hot. The bowl may also require soaking to remove baked-on residue and can be awkward to handle when cleaning.
