CHOICE has made a submission to the Reserve Bank of Australia's consultation on merchant card payment costs and surcharging.

CHOICE is calling for a ban on debit card surcharges, which have become the most common form of payment method in Australia over recent years. We are calling for a fair way to pay so it does not cost to use your own money, and people can trust that the advertised price is the price they will normally pay.

Despite advances in technology and increased competition in the payments industry, surcharges are becoming more common and fees are not decreasing. We are therefore also calling for a cap on credit card surcharges and a number of additional interventions aimed at getting small businesses a better deal from the payments industry.
